While working in a general hospital, Fukui observed patients struggling to consume meals mixed with medication. Recognizing the need for a safer and more relaxed way of administering medication, she embarked on a project that would eventually lead to the creation of Magic Jelly. This swallowing aid is the world's first of its kind, designed to cover up medication and deliver it to the stomach safely and smoothly.
Magic Jelly is made from agar and other natural ingredients that do not interfere with the medication's efficacy. It allows patients to swallow multiple pills at once without the risk of choking or gagging. The jelly is designed to dissolve completely in the stomach, just like medication taken with water. This innovative design caters to the increasing demand for solid pharmaceutical formulations, offering a better mouthfeel and precise dosage.
The design process involved creating a jelly with particles of a certain size to completely cover the medication. Careful consideration was given to the use of additives approved for medical devices to avoid interference with the medication. The jelly is also designed to be low in calories, catering to patients with kidney problems or diabetes.
Magic Jelly comes in two types of packages, depending on the place, method, and frequency of use. It is available in seven flavors: lemon, strawberry, peach, grape, chocolate, strawberry chocolate, and coffee jelly. The packaging is designed with special techniques to crush the jelly into the right flake size, ensuring it won't stick to the throat.
Despite the initial challenges, including skepticism from doctors and pharmacists about the use of agar, and potential legal issues, Fukui persisted. Through laboratory results and societal need demonstrations, she managed to clear these obstacles. Today, Magic Jelly holds numerous patents, proving its uniqueness and innovation in the medical field.
In recognition of its innovative design and contribution to improving the quality of life for patients, Magic Jelly was awarded the Silver A' Medical Devices and Medical Equipment Design Award in 2017. This prestigious award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation. Magic Jelly is a testament to Atsuko Fukui's dedication to improving patient care and her innovative approach to design.
